Cres Summer Carnival: A Joyful Celebration
The Cres Summer Carnival, held in mid-July, offers an incredibly exciting experience and fantastic fun for all participants. This joyful event has a deeply rooted tradition, and the atmosphere is filled with joy and euphoria.
A Rich Tradition of Masquerades
The Carnival in Cres has a centuries-old tradition. It usually attracts local participants during the winter edition. However, to share the joy of masquerading with guests, the carnival group Vežgani has been organizing a summer carnival since 2000. Initially, only local masks participated, but soon groups from Istria, Kvarner, and even Italy joined. The hosts strive to show their love for masquerade while simultaneously expressing creativity through diverse masks. Often at the summer carnival, a group mask is repeated, which is also used at the famous Rijeka Carnival, depicting different aspects of the rich natural and historical heritage of the island of Cres each year.
Music, Dance, and Lights
The Summer Carnival in Cres has a well-established program. The procession, which includes over 400 masqueraders, gathers at the city gates of Porta Bragadina. Passing through the city, they entertain numerous guests and local residents. At Frane Petrić Square, masked groups present their dance choreographies, and the fun continues late into the night. Rhythms and melodies of various music genres fill the air, creating an incredible positive energy. Visitors can enjoy dancing under the stars, surrounded by colorful lights that contribute to the magic of the carnival experience.
